The aim of the Historical Society is to collect and preserve local history, and we do that in several ways.  One is to sell books on local history at the Barnum House bookstore.  Another way is having published our acclaimed magazine, the "Humboldt Historian" since 1947.

       One book for sale at the Society, combining both, is part of a series of stories reprinted from earlier Historians in 1983, Golden Adventures from the Humboldt Historian. some of which were originally written more than a century ago.  This book is a unique opportunity to preserve the memories and research of Humboldters, many of whom are no longer with us, and thus preserving snatches of the past that would otherwise be lost.

       The subjects covered are an exciting variety, making one want to delve into every one.  There are stories that give unique views of Shelter Cove, Fieldbrook, Scottsville, Bald Mountain, Punkin Center, and Graveyard Prairie. We also are given a look at the life of stagecoach drivers, Winship Schooldays, infamous shipwrecks, early automobiling, and the once prosperous business of ship building.

       And throughout, there are names of historically memorable Humboldters, both as the subjects of these 30 stories and their writers; Andrew Genzoli, Susie Baker Fountain, the Samoa Base Ball players, Martha Roscoe, Ru-Flo Harper, Maxwell Rowley, Evelyn McCormick, and Hans Bendixsen's schooner the Jessie Miner.

       In its bookstore, library and vast ever-growing archives, the Historical Society continues to take pride in preserving memories that deserve being heard in the present and future.
