Eureka & Humboldt County
Eureka & Humboldt County
By the Clarke Historical Museum. "The cry amongst the redwoods - Eureka! - was the shout heard from early pioneers in 1850 as they came to settle in Humboldt County. Discovery of gold permanently changed the area's history, and eventually lead to the extraction of Humboldt's other natural resource: the 'red gold' of its forests." Member price: $19.79
One of the consistent best sellers at the Historical Society's book store is Eureka & Humboldt County, California, one of Arcadia Publishing's "Images of America" series. In fact, this book was a trail blazer. Published in 2001, it was the first in this nation-wide series to focus on Humboldt County.
Written by two now-former Directors of the Clarke Museum, it uses photographs from the Clarke's collection to give an overview of all aspects of our history.
Since then, many more Arcadia books have appeared, focusing in greater detail on many local communities and historical subjects: Trinidad, Falk, Scotia, Rio Del, Fortuna and the Eel River Valley, Ferndale, lumber mills, state parks, railroads, floods, lighthouses and others. But for readers looking for a great visual overview of our county's rich heritage, this book is ideal. With informative captions to over 120 photographs, it covers the indigenous peoples, settlement drawn by gold and then timber, maritime and farming history, the parting of the "redwood curtain", the natural environment, film making, businesses, festivals, and all the topics that make Humboldt's history unique.
Come to the Barnum bookstore and pick up this book for your own shelves or to give to a friend so they can appreciate how very visual and special our historic county is!
