HCHS Events: Saturday Speaker Series

Saturday Lecture Programs are sponsored and organized by the Humboldt County Historical Society in partnership with the Clarke Historical Museum. They are hosted at the Museum (240 E Street, Eureka) on the first Saturday of every month. The programs are always FREE but seating is limited - come early to reserve a seat!

All lectures will be available in person and online
unless otherwise announced.

Salmon Brown Son of John Brown, Abolitionist

Local historian, writer and educator Virginia Howard Mullan will present “Salmon Brown, Son of John Brown” on Saturday, October 5 at 1:00 p.m., in the first-floor conference room of the Humboldt County Library, 1313 Third Street, Eureka. Admission is free, and everyone is invited.

Virginia will be sharing about Salmon Brown's involvement with his famous abolitionist father, John Brown. She will follow Salmon's journey to California, his sheep raising in Bridgeville, and eventual retirement to Oregon.

Virginia has written and enjoyed history since the 1970s. Currently a teacher at Cuddeback School, Virginia taught at Bridgeville School for 31 years.  While working with a friend on a book about Bridgeville she happened upon the John Brown/Salmon Brown connection. 

Join local historian, writer and educator Virginia Howard Mullan as she brings forward Salmon Brown, son of abolitionist John Brown, his work with his father and his eventual home in Humboldt County.
