“Where, Exactly, is Eureka?”
The Right Reverend William Ingraham Kip
Traveling to Eureka in 1870.

When asked in 1871 if he would come to Eureka to consecrate the newly built Christ Church, Bishop of California William Kip supposedly responded that he would be happy to, but asked, “Where, exactly, is Eureka?” The California map shown on the cover is entitled Map of Public Surveys in California & Nevada to accompany Report of Commissioner of the General Land Office 1868. This map would have represented one of the most current maps of the time. On the back cover is a map of the City of Eureka from the 1930s with stars denoting places mentioned in this issue.
