From Garberville to Ettersburg, community elders tell their stories through interviews conducted by South Fork High School and Osprey Learning Center students, sponsored by the Rotary Club in 2004. These remarkable personal histories combine resonant and often poignant details of daily life with the larger events of the times, such as the 1964 flood. The interview format serves the material well. A central set of questions provides an accessible framework for the stories, while highlighting the individual voice of each narrator. One is reminded of the harmony of a choir: each voice has its own unique virtues, even as it contributes to an overall texture, in this case the shared life of a rural community. |
