HCHS Framework

The following summary of the strategic framework was reviewed and approved by the Humboldt County Historical Society board of directors on Oct. 8, 2002. It will be evaluated continuously and is meant to be a working document that evolves as the work of the Society progresses.

Vision
The Humboldt County Historical Society is a dynamic community resource that helps the Northwestern California region remember its past, understand the present, and look forward to our future.

Purpose
The Humboldt County Historical Society shall further an understanding and appreciation of all peoples, places, events and activities of Humboldt County and related areas. The Society shall accomplish this by acquiring, preserving, interpreting, creating and disseminating historical information and by education and assisting others to do the same.

To fulfill its purpose, the Society:

  • Collects, documents, preserves, and makes accessible information and local history documents.
  • Provides a center for research
  • Creates programs and exhibits for the public
  • Publishes a quarterly journal for members
  • Seeks out and encourages the participation, in a variety of ways, of the people of the Humboldt County region in the activities of the Society.

Goals
The Society will pursue the following broad goals that address major operational areas, including collections, facilities, human resources, and finances.

  • Human and Financial Resources - Increase revenue and sources of support to ensure future growth.
  • Facilities - Evaluate current facilities and develop both long- and short-term plans to address needs.
  • Programs & Services - Provide innovative programs, research, and educational opportunities.
  • Governance - Develop the Society's infrastructure to support long-term operational needs and growth.
  •
